learnpipe search widgets enable you to add customised search
functionality to your web site / intranet. You can define what
providers are included in the search results. Possible uses include:

Example 1: A company that sells Cisco hardware may wish to define a
widget that includes Cisco training specialists only.

Example 2: A group or association may wish to limit search to their
member companies or providers that they have vetted.

Example 3: A company may wish to define a widget that includes their
approved training vendors only.

The widgets can be any size or format. To implement, you just need to
select the filter criteria (ex. location) or select the providers,
then embed Javascript on your web site / intranet and you're done. Its
that simple!

Never mind your country, its learnpipe that needs you!

Over the last few months, we've watched as the number of language related searches on learnpipe has soared. This should be good news but we know that a lot of our searchers are not finding the information they require.

Why? ....

To date, we haven't managed to attract sufficient numbers of instructors with the language skills that are being searched for.

We require more (a lot more) instructors with that can deliver project management courses in French, assertivenesss courses in Italian, Java courses in German and so on.

We need more instructors who specialise in teaching language courses: English, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Italian, French are all being searched for on learnpipe everyday.

So help us to help people find you. Create an instructor profile with us. Its free!

New Feature Planned - Feedback Appreciated

Update: The search widget is now ready. We're looking for people to help us to test. Interested? info@learnpipe.com

We are planning to introduce a new feature to learnpipe, which enable companies to add custom search functionality to their intranets. The option will enable the company to restrict the search results to their approved vendors. It would work as follows:

1. learnpipe Search widget is added to companies intranet / learning portal;

2. learnpipe only returns search results from their approved vendors.

We think that this feature is a nice value add for Training / HR Managers / Directors. It allows them to leverage learnpipe's search technology to deliver better search results for their own use. Any thoughts?
learnpipe is growing quickly. We've been busy adding some great new features...

Alexa Update: learnpipe's 3 month average traffic rank on Alexa has now climbed to: 847,880. That's a 440% increase over the last 3 month period! View Alexa traffic details for learnpipe.

We've added some great new features including:

1. Search A
ctivity Monitor - See where people are searching from and what courses are being displayed. The pin is placed at the searchers location, the course details are included on the bubble.

Check it out: Search Activity Monitor

2. Twitter Integration - learnpipe now supports enquiry notification via Twitter. Login, click update Account and add your twitter username. Be sure to check the 'Twitter Notification' check box.

3. GUI Overhaul - we've tweaked learnpipe's GUI to improve the way search results are presented and provide for easier navigation. The changes are subtle but make a big difference.

4. Much Faster Search - learnpipe's core search technology has been upgraded. Search results are now returned much quicker and this is with a far larger data set.

5. Enhanced Web results - Inspired by Yahoo's SearchMonkey. See Example here learnpipe uses two data sources: structured (data published to us) un-structured (web pages that we've indexed).

Enhanced / richer web is important in better integrating our two data sources. Notice how we've included some key information along with several links to different learnpipe sections related to the vendor. This really enhances the value of our web results. To avail of this feature, you need to have an account with us. Sign-up here.

Help us to help you grow. Support learnpipe by feeding your courses to us. Together we can make it much easier for people to find all training courses. If you haven't already done so, sign-up now.. Its free!

Happy searching!

learnpipe's Elevator Pitch for Techcrunch

FINDING THE RIGHT TRAINING COURSE JUST GOT A WHOLE LOT EASIER

Cork, Ireland (learnpipe) December 22, 2008 -- Its almost New Year's resolutions time again but before you head to Google to find your next training course, check out a start-up called learnpipe. learnpipe is a new breed of search service called a vertical or specialised search engine. Since learnpipe only offers learning related search results, you avoid the noise that you can get from Google. John Dineen is the Founder & CEO of learnpipe: 'Don't get us wrong. We love Google too but because Google has to offer great search results for everything, the information you are looking for can get lost in a sea of results. Great training providers aren't necessarily great at search engine optimisation (SEO) and the gems can be buried deep in Google's results.'.

Up to recently, learnpipe focused on providing search results from structured data only - that is - from sites who feed data to learnpipe. John Dineen: 'Access to structured data is the holy grail of the specialised search world. With structure, you can manipulate data to offer really useful results. On learnpipe, you can quickly compare courses from different providers, filter the results by location, timeframe or delivery format. Structured data also enables you to integrate third party services like maps or currency tools that really add value for the user.'

learnpipe's search results are displayed in tabs: 'Courses'; 'Products & Services'; 'Instructors'; 'Learners'; & 'Web'. Enter a simple keyword search and learnpipe will display its results for each tab. This layout really simplifies the search process. They also include tag clouds that offer helpful suggestions to aid your search.

With the launch of its new 'Web' tab, learnpipe now offers search results that its crawlers have indexed from across the web (i.e. unstructured data). John Dineen: 'This is an important development for us. Its early days for our index but it means that Iearnpipe can now include all learning sites whether they are feeding to us or not. This enables us to scale learnpipe very quickly and means that our search results are more comprehensive than ever before. Our 'Web' tab displays results like you get in Google. The difference is that we only index learning related sites, which means very concise results.'.

And the best bit is that learnpipe is free. The only restriction is that your product or service must relate to education. So why free? John Dineen: 'Our objective is to deliver the best possible search results for all things learning. Pay for inclusion models offer skewed results in that only the organisations that can afford or are willing to pay are included. learnpipe wants everyone to be included. We believe that if we offer a top quality search service we can commercialise the site in other ways.

It is great to see that the current economic woes haven't totally scared young companies from giving it a go. learnpipe is a really useful service for all those involved in training. So here's a New Year's suggestion. Learning providers, don't wait for learnpipe's crawlers to find you, head over there now and get involved. Buyers, you can safely add 'more time-off' to your list for 2009. Training related search just got a whole lot easier!

Instructors, welcome aboard

If you've visited the site over the past couple of days you may have noticed something slightly different with our appearance!

We've rolled out some changes to our design which include a tabbed menu interface to separate the different sections of the site more logically - basically that means learnpipe should be easier use and navigate. We think it looks cool. Let us know what you think!

Calling all instructors

We've added a new profile option for training instructors. So if there's a topic you can teach, sign-up now! Here's a summary of all our registration options:

Sign-up as a Learner if you want to find training courses or are seeking lessons from instructors, or just want to share your ideas/knowledge with the learnpipe community!

Sign-up as an Instructor if you are seeking opportunities to work with training companies or want to find new students - or more likely for them to find you.

Sign-up as a Vendor if you're an organisation that offers structured training courses or other educational services.

You must create one of the above profiles when you register, but you're not restricted to having one profile per account. Once you've created an account you have the option of attaching multiple profiles to it, so if you're an Instructor that can teach C++ programming, but you also want to learn Ruby you can create a Learner and an Instructor profile, or any combination thereof.

Further additions/updates you might like to know about:

  • We've updated our FAQ section by adding new FAQs for Messaging and Instructors and also modified a few existing answers so they make more sense, we hope!
  • A new private messaging system has been added so you can easily contact other learnpipe users.
  • If you look at the main search page you'll see we've opted to streamline the search further with a single search box. Just type in the topic you want to find and hit Search!
  • You'll also notice it's a bit cloudy with all those tag clouds about the site - these highlight keywords that are relevant to your search term. The more a keyword stands-out the more popular that keyword is within the site (and hence more results). We hope this will aid your search - if your initial keyword doesn't get the results you want, you may spot another related keyword which hits the spot. We've got more ideas for tag clouds so stay tuned.
Following on from our previous post examining the learnpipe XML feed we now present a video tutorial on how to set up a course feed using Jitterbit. Jitterbit is an open source Extraction, Transformation and Loading tool and will enable you to map your course data in your database to our XML feed format.

http://www.learnpipe.com/blog/2008/11/19/using_jitterbit_to_create_a_learnpipe_course_feed.html

The video uses an example database to demonstrate how you can use Jitterbit to generate an XML course feed mapped from your own database. The video also covers how you add your feed URL to your learnpipe profile once the feed is created.

If you have difficulty viewing the embedded video a larger version can be accessed here. To view the video with detailed subtitles click the CC icon the lower right of the video.

Live from the ITQ Conference, London

A big thanks to everyone who stopped by the learnpipe stand at the ITQ Conference today. I really enjoyed meeting you all. Thanks so much for all your positive comments. It was very encouraging for me to get this kind of feedback from people who are active in the learning industry. Thanks again!

Looking forward to you all signing up to learnpipe. See you soon, John

vendor reviews - how will it work?

Several vendors have been asking us about what options will be included in learnpipe's vendor review system. Here's what you can expect...
  • vendors can choose to enable / disable all feedback (i.e. when feedback is disabled public cannot give feedback on your courses);
  • vendor can choose to enable / disable comments only (similar to enabling / disabling comments on a YouTube video);
  • when publishing courses to learnpipe, you will be able to include 'Previous Delegate Comments' in the outline. This will allow you to post positive feedback that you gathered from previous events.
Vendors who decide to let their customers have their say will have the option to respond / address any comment that is posted against them.
If any comment is inaccurate / unfair, you can request that it is removed.

We also have some tools to identify any fake posts (for example, by competitors). Any vendors who engage in such activity will be outed.

Tip - it would be a very good idea to use learnpipe's feedback tool for all your course evaluations.
You will build a strong profile which will help you to sell more (think of vendors on eBay with excellent reviews).

The feedback tool will go live very soon.
